I have a passion for creating healing spaces that are affirming, empowering, and real. As a Queer Person of Color, I know firsthand how identity can shape the way we move through the world and how important it is to be seen and supported in our full complexity.
I specialize in working with LGBTQ+ clients, QTBIPOC communities, and those navigating anxiety, identity exploration, trauma, and life transitions.
Hello and welcome, I’m Dr. Deborah Barnett. From the time I was young, I knew that I would either be in the performing arts or healing arts. My PhD is in clinical psychology, backed by a background of experience in holistic health. My integrative approach includes ACT, Positive Psychology, Energy Psychology, and Mindfulness. I also practice Brainspotting to support the healing of trauma. I work with adults and specialize in treating anxiety, stress, relationship challenges, and life transitions.
I am a human resources professional turned counselor. I enjoy helping perfectionist individuals cope with anxiety, move through depression and work toward their personal and professional goals. I have training in EMDR, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Mindfulness.
I’m a licensed therapist who specializes in working with anxious overthinkers, people-pleasers, perfectionists, and caregivers who are exhausted from trying to hold everything together. Many of my clients are thoughtful, capable people who look “high-functioning” on the outside but feel overwhelmed, self-critical, or emotionally drained on the inside.
Before becoming a therapist, I worked as a school counselor, which deeply shaped how I approach mental health, relationships, and family systems. I also bring lived experience as a parent into my work, especially when supporting clients who are navigating stress, burnout, and the emotional demands of raising children.
I have been a Social Worker for 30 years! That's crazy for me to think about because I am not THAT old......and I have learned a lot (about myself) along the way. I have learned that I do like to talk to people more than I let on. I have learned that I can be very patient listener and I give good feedback. And, I have learned that, at some point, we all have to make changes in our lives and that can be scary. I have also learned it's not as scary when we talk about it out loud........just saying.
From a young age, I’ve felt a deep calling to help others — a passion that naturally led me to pursue a career in social work. I became a proud Catamount in 2011, earning both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Social Work from Western Carolina University in 2014 and 2015.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist (LCAS) in the state of North Carolina. Over the past 12 years, I’ve had the privilege of supporting individuals and families through challenges related to addiction, mental health, trauma, and crisis.
My professional journey has taken me through a variety of settings, including inpatient psychiatric care, child protective services, psychiatric triage, community-based services for individuals with severe and persistent mental illness, and addiction recovery treatment.
